The length of the pulses is determined by the size of the signal voltage swing producing them & should be about 1-2uSecs for reliable detection. This can be adjusted by either the series RC signal supply to the detector or the reference voltage divider.
The 110V zener was chosen for its variable capacitance characteristic so others may work (eg tuner varicap diode) as it seems that all 1N5272's were not created equal anyway.
