Those nops are significant as they affect the overall timing of the code and make more difference with a PIC than
an SX in turbo mode. There should be the same number of cycles between makehline calls in the main loop for stable operation (ie so that all syncs happen at the right time intervals) so the place to change the timing is in makehline itself as this where the code is executing most of the time.
