The fluffy programmer connects to the 6 pin header next to the SX chip via a flying lead for in-system programming and is controlled by a serial interface to your PC. Getting the SX code to match the resonator or crystal speed will probably take quite a few tries to get it just right IE edit the asm file/assemble with mpasm/reprogram the SX/check the result so not having to remove the chip is an advantage. There are other types of programmers which can do the same job - this was the most successful for me.
The first hurdle with a disabled 5508W box is getting it to tune stations (just shows a blue screen) and most of the modifications are about fixing this by interfacing a PIC chip (PIC16F84A) with suitable code (tuner.asm) to bring it back to life so the first requirement to start this project is a PIC programmer as the fluffy uses a PIC16F84A as well.
