Subject: Why did my Cockatiel lay an egg?

I have, what is now apparently,a female ( to which we never new what sex she was). We've had her for about 6 years and she has never laid anything but a dump!!I went to feed her this morning and found an egg at the bottom of her cage! She gave us no indication of this event. She's never been with any other bird nor has she ever done this before...what gives? Is this normal? Can I expect more eggs now or in the future? Should I mate her?
Thanks.....this is mind boggling!!!!
