O Brasil estreou no Miss Mundo em 1958. E com pé direito. A pernambucana, 2a. colocada no Miss Brasil daquele ano, lia Shakespeare no original e usou e abusou da sua morenice. Foi a única latino-americana classificada entre as semifinalistas numa disputa vencida pela sul-africana Penelope Anne Coelen. Quem a viu no Miss Brasil Mundo 2001, realizado em Recife, afirma que Sonia Campos ainda guarda a majestade tropical que fez sucesso em Londres.
