Miss Thailand under fire for no-bra photo spread
Bangkok(AFP)- The newly-crowned Miss Thailand came under fire yesterday over a magazine photo spread in which she posed in a low-cut white dress and apparently without a bra.
Sponsors including broadcaster ITV were up in arms about the pictures which appeared in Priew magazine and said that the beauty queen, Pathiporn Sithipong, was not being properly supervised by the pageant's organizers.
ITV president Sanchai Teawprasertkul said the station complained to the pageant founders, the Vajiravudh College Alumni, after receiving a flood of complaints from members of the public.
"They all said that Miss Thailand is an ambassador for Thai culture and tourism, so she should appear in an appropriate manner,"he told AFP.
"The pictures that have appeared on its magazine are not very appropriate... one of them makes it look like she's not wearing a bra,"he said.
While Thailand is famous for its raunchy nightlife, the kingdom's society is deeply conservative and skimpy clothing is generally frowned upon. The Miss Thailand pageant does not even have a swimsuit section.
The Priew magazine shoot showing Pathiporn in a sultry pose may be tame stuff by Western standards, but Sanchai said it had caused offense and that organizers must take steps to prevent it happening again.
"We have had a lot of complaints from sponsors and members of the public asking why this sort of photograph of Miss Thailand has ended up in a magazine,"he said.
'We looked into the issue and found out that it is an issue where those people who are looking after Miss Thailand on a day to day basis aren't putting a lot of concern into the appropriatenessof the activities.
"The station and the alumni foundation were now in talks to "establish some kind of new measure" to supervise Miss Thailand and her runner-up, he said.
