MS Nigeria, student Toyin Raji, receives the Miss Personality trophy during pre-pageant rites of the Miss World Contest in Sun City. She was voted the most popular finalist by the contestants themselves.

Ms Nigeria barred from Miss World contest

Sun City, South Africa- Organizers of the Miss World contest said Thursday they had barred Miss Nigeria from taking part, amid continuing outrage over the execution of nine Nigerian minority rights activists.

At first the contest's organizers opposed political sanctions but they changed their mind on the advice of the South African presidency and the United Nations, Jerry Inzerillo, director of the Sun City tourism complex, said.

Student Toyin Raji, 23, will therefore not take part in the Miss World final set to take place Saturday in Sun City, north of Johannesburg.

Nigeria's military ruler general Sani Abacha last week outraged world opinion by hanging nine minority rights activists, including writer Ken Saro-Wiwa.
