She remembered feeling the ocean breeze rustling her hair
As they drove towards the coast that warm summer evening.
Poseidon’s wrath must have subsided,
For the waters were very still as if they had been shifted to neutral.
Back when nights didn’t plague them with homework;
Back when the sun didn’t go to sleep until late in the evening,
They would lie on the sand,
Gazing up at the little white specks that covered the night sky
Like the dazzling fireflies they used to catch when they were younger.
Only you can’t catch stars,
But to make conversation she would ask,
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful to catch a star?”
Laughter was his reply, and she started to blush at her silly question.
Then he turned his eyes towards her, grabbed her hand and said,
“I’ve already caught mine.”
Awkward silence preceded; she swore that through the silence
It was possible to hear the butterflies fluttering inside of her.
He would later admit that he never felt his heart beat so fast.
Later on in life, whenever she felt the ocean breeze on her aged skin,
She would remember that warm summer night
When she too had caught her first star.
