First off, some background information. This poem was inspired by a French & Indian War reenactment I participated in this past weekend. I was on the British/Colonial side against the French and their loyal Indians, and the British forces suffered a rout on Saturday.
The Battle for the Homestead
"Fall in!" are the words,
Heard all around.
Calling the men,
To the battle ground.
"Forward march!" are the words,
That split through the rain.
Everything to lose,
Yet nothing to gain.
"Prime and load!" are the words,
Yelled to the sky.
Men saying prayers,
"God, don't let me die."
"Make ready!" are the words,
That echoed the air.
Rattling the Indians,
From their hidden lair.
"Present!" is the word,
Which ordered the groups.
To level the muskets,
Aim at the French troops.
"Fire!" is the word,
Which preceded the crash,
Of the thunder of muskets,
And the smoke and the flash.
"Viva la Roi!" are the words,
Screamed during retreat.
The bayonet charge,
The British defeat.
