Again, association. The thought process here I think was teach the dog that when it goes for the other dog there is pain. But dogs don't reason or build implications the way we do....

It sees the other dog and there is pain. There are a lot of basic associations the dog could build. That the down command caused the pain, for one. If that's true, I'm not surprised that he had to do it a number of times and until the dog screamed. It could have been again, actually encouraging the behavior rather than preventing it. Of course what the dog probably did was a shock reaction. Nothing I'm doing is right, so I'll lay low. Then I would assume (or hope) that there was praise.

So in this circumstance, the dog actually responded to the praise rather than the correction.

Of course, this is a 'for instance', I'm not a dog...I certainly wasn't in that dog's head. But I don't like vague punishment.

This is why it is strongly suggested that you avoid treating acts of aggression with punishment. It's too difficult in reality.

Also, from experience, seminar and reading...most training that is compelled by punishment doesn't have a very long lasting effect.

Been fun kiddies, but I have to get to bed. :)
