Subject: dream

i work in a hospital cafeteria, in a fairly menial capacity (dishwasher). I nevertheless enjoy this work, because it gives me plenty of time to zone and think about other things (like my writing). Shortly after this 9/11 shit went down, I had an interesting dream. I dreamed I was at work, and there was some terrible disaster (unspecified, but catastrophic). In my dream, the city I live in was half destroyed, the power was out in the hospital, and we were depending on emergency generators for electricity. Most of the doctors, nurses and administrators weren't there, like they'd all either been killed or had run away in a panic. Of the staff members that remained, which was myself and a few others, we were trying to help the patients, get them calmed down, fed, drugged, etc. Then a lot more people started to arrive in the ER seeking medical attention because they'd been injured in the disaster or in the looting, rioting, and chaos that followed. Outside, the city was like burning down. Most of these new arrivals had serious, gruesome injuries. I started treating them as best I could with the supplies I had on hand. Bizarrely, I wasn't nervous at all. I knew exactly what to do. It was as if I'd been waiting all my life for this moment. Anyway, that's as far as I got and then, disappointingly, I woke up. I've come to think of it as a classic empowerment dream. I hope it's not prophetic, in the sense that I wouldn't like to see my city destroyed. But I also think that the way things are now, so politically unstable and potentially explosive, there will soon perhaps be an opportunity for people to take on roles that they never would have undertaken in peacetime. My dad says this dream means I should get my ass in gear & go to med school, ha ha.
