Subject: standardized testing

hey michael--i think it is fairly clear to everyone where my opinions rest in regard to standardized testing. does that mean i don't think standards are important? not at all. most would say about me that i have very high standards...for myself and others, so, beware. there is just too much emphasis placed on the value of such testing. i've always told my students, "a test doesn't tell me what you know, but it sure tells me what you don't know." give students the benefit of the doubt...they always know tons more than you will ever test them on. remember the story about my ex-brother-in-law...reading vs. car repair. he was not successful in academics; was he also not successful in life? he seems pretty happy to me! getting back to standardized testing specifically, do YOU want your students' test scores determining what you teach and how? the rating by your supervisor? how much you earn? perks for your school? society at large appears eager for them to do exactly that. okay, enough said...:)
