ABBA Minutes, March 17, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 9:02 PM EST.

Old Business:

Purebred Puppy The BSL Forum - Maureen moved that Ruth's dog Rose, who for years sat on a table campaigning for anti BSL, be used as the logo on the BSL Forum. Sandy seconded the motion. Ruth will send a photo to Ray of Purebred Puppy. http://www.purebredpuppy.com/index.shtml Is the site of the new ABBA board when it is up.

Regional Representatives - It was the original intent of ABBA to have state representatives. Of the participants present, the following list was developed.

- Forward state ordinances to Ruth so she can post them on the ABBA website.

- Pro-Active Education - Info Packs are being organized by Maureen and Brandi. MAIL YOUR SNAIL ADDY TO MAUREEN AND THEY WILL BE SENT TO YOU. when you get the materials send them out in a nice folder. Make them glitzy. Send them BEFORE trouble starts to city council members, and kennel clubs. stop reinventing the wheel everytime another person asks for information to help them combat BSL in their community.

-BSL Updates-

Baltimore, MD - Maureen is waiting to receive the rewrite of the dog ordinance.

Bellvue, NE - The meeting of the coucnil is on March 25th. We should start e-mailing and writing letters ASAP. Send a letter to the Bellevue city council. They are proposing legislation there. Maureen will post it on ABBA board. Bellevue BSL was the result of a child mauling. The Doctor who treated the child is on the council and has proposed the ordinance.

Warren, MI - Warren is done. The Mayor gave out the Councilman's home telepnone # and everybody in the world called him. According to Dr. Stinson, it's over for now.
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington, NC is trying to pass legislation according to the AKC website.

Valisca, IO - E-mails from Dorothy Herren are posted on the ABBA Board. She is in touch with Ruth of Valisca, IO ...Ruth wants to know if dogs have rights.

Memphis, TN - The Memphis bill has been on the table for at least 3 years. The ADBA club there has been able to keep it from passing so far. Grace21082 said the proposed BSL in Memphis was sent to her through the Responsible Animal Owners of Tennessee email list. http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/ New bills can be found on that site.

Cranston, RI - The 'so called' pit bull attack on a Golden Retriever has the city revisiting BSL. Cranston is looking at Newport's law which is very specifically vicious dog regulations. MA and RI residents fought very strongly with the city of Newport to get this past some years ago.

Milwaukee, WI -....At first residents didn't think much was going to happen but doesn't look good.

-State Reports-

New Hampshire - Karen reports 37 dogs were confiscated when DiVito was arrested for alleged dog fighting activities. Some of the dogs shared runs, but aggression remains a concern. It will be difficult to find rescue for all of these dogs. They will be held by the courts until the case is resolved. They are likely to be euthanized after that. Cat licensing was passed within the same ordinance.

New Business:

Questions -
- Why is ABBA meeting on AOL's Instant Messenger now? This is the only way we could conduct a meeting without certain individuals attempting to disrupt our progress.

- How can I find out about BSL in my area? Keep updated on council meetings, newspapers, and legislation. All can be checked online.

- What board should I post to? Post to the ABBA Board anything that directly affects ABBA. Post to the BSL Forum anything you want to crosspost.

- How do you check for recently files lawsuits? Check to see if your court is on line.

- New Meeting Forum...how does everyone like this new chat by invitation forum? It was unanimous that this was a better forum for ABBA meetings.

Brags and Announcements:

Lora - Junior, is down at WR was at dog shows, at 10 months old, took the Breed over 2 Specials, so it was a 5 pt. for him!!!!!! He got a serious look in Group...made the final 6 and she had him 5th at the end.

Peggy - I did my first AI this weekend. Wish me luck for puppies.

SARPits - Last month when I was on a search for a missing 85-year-old man, a reporter saw me unload my pitbull SAR dog out of my truck. He said, "Wow, now that's a story. A pitbull that saves lives!" HE made good on it. We were in the Berkeley Daily Planet and on the cover of the San Mateo Daily Journal. Lisa - My Male Ch. Hurricane's King of Hearts made it to # 9 in breed stats in just 3 weeks of showing in February and has 2 group 2's and 3 group 3's and a group 4 already.
