ABBA Minutes, April 7, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 9 PM EDT.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as posted.

Old Business:

-BSL Updates-

Villicsa, Iowa - The city council has moved the city council meeting from 6 pm to 5 pm .

Baltimore, MD - There has been no news. Maureen will contact them.

-State Reports-

Indiana - Jim gave Gina some information that he had on Indianapolis. Possessing paraphenalia, ie. treadmills, flirtpoles, etc. was moved up to a Class A misdemeanor. It only applies to you if you get caught in the box with a dog.

California - Denise put a post on the LarSan board for Shawn Jones of Baytown Kennel to look into this American Canyon thing. It's about 5 minutes from Vallejo. She will check and get filled in on American Canyon. Denise will also look into the Almaden Kennel dog situation.

Virginia - There is a bill on the governor's desk. The state wants rescue people to pay $100.00 and for every foster there is an additional 50.00 per year to maintain their rescue ability. Fax and e-mails need to reach him by Monday, April 8th. The information is on the BSL board.

Michigan- Niles just adopted a dangerous dog ordinance after years of debate. Almont, MI ban has been repealed in favor of a vicious dog ordinance. No BSL in Niles. Leah said if someone can get his number, I will call explain to him. It is only going to hurt the legitimate rescues.

New Business:

-The article, "Pit Bulls Are An Assault Weapon On Four Legs", has been posted on the boards. Gina suggested we need to write this woman's editor!!

-Janet Duval and Almaden Kennel story - Lisa provided a link to a story regarding Almaden Kennels dogs. http://www.sacbee.com/content/lifestyle/pets /story/2038555p-2300463c.html Leah stated the USDA will step in if someone calls. They did on a case in NC about 18 months ago. The dogs were being held as evidence and being neglected by the shelter. The USDA came in, pulled the dogs, wrote citations and the shelter manager was arrested. Maureen stated, I am an ASPCA member and will contact them tomorrow.

- When you go to shows, do a meet the breed and a BSL/education poster.

-Denise, was offered congratulations on getting some excellent information in print.

Brags and Announcements:

-Lora- did an informal Meet the Breed this weekend. MeMe made the newspapers. There was also a rescue pit bull there from AARF, which is a fund raising money to help with abuse cases.

-Lynne - Has a new kitchen floor and an A in her HTML class.

-Jim- Mini Jane got a 3rd at an AADR fun show yesterday, and Spanky got Judges Choice and a 2nd in his class, as well.
