ABBA Minutes, April 14, 2002

The April 14, 2002 ABBA Meeting was called to order at 9:02 PM EDT.

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as posted.

Old Business:

ABBA Board on purebred puppy - user ID Sertoma is going to be the moderator. In the next couple of weeks, purebred puppy will be changing the board over to the new version and we can add another moderator.

PPA - Nothing has been reported on PPA since the April Taking Command Newsletter.

State Reports:

- North Carolina - Maureen had 4 contacts for NC who really want to help. She e-mailed them to Grayson.

- New Jersey - There is a very publicized pit bull "mauling" story in Union City. The dog had to be shot while hanging off a woman's face in order to get it to release. It made all of the NYC newscasts. The dog was on its property and apparently bit an innocent bystander during a domestic dispute. There was a fist fight on sidewalk. The owner ran into his house, where dog lived. In the commotion, the dog bit a lady who happened to be there. The dog died of gunshot wounds. Grayson will post the newspaper coverage on ABBA board.

- Michigan - MI update was posted on the ABBA board...crossposted from dogwatchleg list.

New Business:

- Maureen is thinking of doing a state study to see how many have gone to court and the outcome. It is a big job so it is on the wish list. She does follow up with the courts when she reads about law suits being instituted.


- Humane trainer list - It is a discuussion board about the AHA's (The American Humane Society) guidelines on training. http://www.americanhumane.org/humanebook.htm The AHA has villified trainers that use corrections. It was suggested that we could send AHA a letter. Also go to the IACP (International Association of Canine Professionals) http://www.dogpro.org/

- BSL Court Challenges -
O: for information about what happens, generally, when bsl is challenged in the courts. How successful are we generally in beating these laws?
A: I do not think that that many have been challenged in court....and if they have it has been ADOA, AKC and the like. ADOA has been successful in the courts in many cases. It takes time and funding in addition to committment.
Q: Are these laws, when brought to court, considered unconstitutional?
A: No, Mahlon stated in MA BSL was found unconstitional and believes that is the only location.

- New Website - Maureen suggested starting a new site called the People Enjoying Bull Breeds America (PEBBA) It would be all about the bullies, the positive things, good deeds, rescue, pictures, all that kind of stuff and have it listed just above the PETA Address. It would be a board of good accomplishments etc. We have no place where there is positive information about our breed. Brandi offered to monitor the website if someone would send her the appropriate information. Maureen and Brandi will meet privately to work out the details on the PEBBA site.

Brags and Announcements:
Jim completed his first week of broadcasting school!

Sue and Harley - got a Group Three Saturday and a Group 2 today from Judges Hubbell and Krause.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:07 PM EDT.
