ABBA Minutes, February 24, 2002

The meeting was called to order at 9:10 PM EST.

Old Business:

-BSL Updates-

We can be of no service to BSL communities unless residents of the community/state step forward to carry the message to the council members.

Cranston, RI - Council meeting takes place Monday, 2/25/02. People to
represent the bull breeds and oppose BSL are needed to attend the meeting.

Milwaukee, WI - AKC policy is to CONSIDER BSL when booking National events. It is not
AKC policy to boycott BSL locations for local shows. It was suggested that
those involved in fighting BSL in Milwaukee add up the expenses for a show
to indicate to the local council what their revenue loss might be if the local
kennel clubs chose to move the venue of the shows. The Milwaukee council
wants residents to speak to the council, not outsiders. MaryLou Stott
(Rotties) and Cathie are planning a meeting with the supporters of the
ordinance. When the aldermen change their vote, alderman murphy
will draft it.

CA - Whipple case - The discussion brought out the following points. AKC referred Emily to
their generic dangerous dog statement when asked their policy on this
case. The danger of Whipple to us is making the connection between
dog aggression and human aggression. Send a letter to the prosecutor
to let them know we want jail time. Punish the deed and enforce
dangerous dog laws. Make the point that a dog can be dog aggressive,
but not dangerous to people. Owners must bear responsiblility for their
dogs. Get positive information about these breeds to the media.

Bellevue, NE - Sue e-mailed the City Clerk for e-mail addresses on the council. They don't
have any. No response has been received from the resident that lives there.
KV Vets and SitStay are both located in NE. ADOA has a contact in Omaha.
The next Bellevue hearing is on March 11th. At this point, Bellevue is in the
process of writing the ordinance. Maureen wrote to the mayor, but received no
response.

Baltimore, MD - They are rewriting the bill and Maureen is waiting to receive it.

State Reports:

-NY- Lockport, NY...Three pits attacked a dog in a child's arms yesterday and there is an
outcry for BSL. It is not legal in NY, but ADOA should be informed.

-VA- There are potential problems in W VA. Maureen will find out more and put it on ABBA
Board.

New Business:

-Fund Raising- We are not a formal club. It is suggested we submit any money raised to the
ADOA's Canine Defense fund and specify where we want it used.

-New Petitions- Use the old petition with the appropriate revisions to save time and effort.

Brags and Announcements:

Peggy - Niagara Falls, NY KC show...Buffi took 3rd and 4th open bitch out of 8 entries two
days, Kaine and Skye earned their CGC and TDI titles and Brutus passed his
CERF...vet said excellent results. Lollypop farm in Rochester, NY has an
AST/Pitbull...white, excellent temperament waiting for adoption.

Ruth - Ollie got a BOB and Lacey got another point last sunday in Baltimore.

Sue - Harley had his first obedience class Thursday...I took Harley's stitches out myself and
didn't gag!

Lora - MeMe's son Jr, that is down at White Rock, just got reserve to a 3 pt major from 9-12
puppy class. Also, he got his PennHip done. Results look excellent...waiting for official
report.

Kristine - Dakota and I were asked to join a highly respected K9 Forensic Dog Team.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:32 PM EST.

Respectfully Submitted,

Peggy Doster
