ABBA Minutes, March 3, 2002

The March 3, 2002 ABBA Meeting was called to order at 9:01 PM EST.

Old Business:

BSL Updates -

-Cranston, Rhode Island- The proposed ordinance did not pass. The first two meetings regarding the ordinance were unopposed. The President of the City Council had stated that he thought it would pass. The meeting had a good turnout along with the local media and many owners. The next meeting is scheduled for March 14th. Sue asked of what assistance we could be. Dianne Guilmette spoke and asked the council how they intended to enforce this ordinance. She received no response. There have been no protests at the previous meetings, but an organized protest will take place on March14th. The Rhode Island state law already covers most of what they are trying to pass. Kristine of SAR Pits was asked to enlighten the City Council on what she does with her dogs. It was also suggested that the people on the council, who want the law passed, be approached and that a copy of the recently published Dog World article about Chicago be provided. It was also suggested a copy of Jackie Frazier's book be sent. A reminder was made ... Communications to legislators should not slam them. Explain your reasons for not wanting BSL and why it doesn't work calmly. Sue will post the contacts on ABBA Board as soon as she gets them. Cranston does not have e-mail addresses posted and this is going to have to be letter writing campaign.

-Bellevue, NE- An ADOA representative is working on it, as well as a resident. Dorothy posted a response from the ADOA representative on ABBA Board.

-Maryland- The state law banning BSL did not pass.

-Florida- AKC has been working behind the scenes

Federal Report:

-Puppy Protection Act- AKC has been working on this and asks for all in the fancy to contact those on the Farm Bill committee.

Other Old Business:

-Log In - If a request to change your login to be the same as the participants voted on is made, do not take offense. To reiterate...Participants expressed a desire to know the first name and state of each person who participates at these meetings. It can not be assumed that everyone knows who you are. The participants come from many venues and affiliations. Confusion was increasing as participation increased. It can not be assumed that everyone knows who you are. No offense is to be taken by such a request. Such a request does not mean we do not want your participation or help.

State Reports:

-Florida- AKC has been working behind the scenes

- Charleston, WVA- Chat has been seen on the dogwatch list. Is there someone/some organization local to whom concerned people may be referred?

-Hornell, NY- Hornell, NY...Home of Clifford and Alberta Ormsby...originators of the X-Pert line...Hornell is considering BSL. NY does have a preemptive state law, but that doesn't stop communities from attempting BSL.

-Grand Rapids,Michigan- There are two groups working on a proposed alternative to BSL. AKC has been working with them. Grand Rapids, MI is meeting on March 25th along with Bellevue, NE Sue has home addresses for contacts in both cities.

New Business:

- Dog World- There is a wonderful article in the new Dog World about the non BSL that passed in Chicago.

-Unfounded Threats- There have been some nasty threats made regarding Maureen and others by Mr Bui with regard to ADOA. Mr. Bui stated that he had sent copies of statements that Maureen made about ADOA, on this chat and the boards, to them. Maureen stated this because there had been some horrific posts made by him on BBB. The only discussions about ADOA have been with the greatest respect. Sandy has talked to Bob Duffy of ADOA and Maureen has been assured no problem exists between ABBA and ADOA. Copies of ABBA chats are kept. Any questions regarding statements being made during meetings can be substantiated. Maureen stated this will be the last time she will address this issue anywhere but legally.

-ABBA Website - Ruth has added copies of the MD, RI and NY laws to the website along with a link to the new BSL message board. Ruth will set up a page for the newsletter. Maureen has some articles and would like to get it going. There are sufficient articles to fill one page. UKC has sent a link regarding how to write a letter about fighting BSL. Ruth will add a link to that, in addition to a link to AKC's Taking Command Newsletter.

-ABBA E-Mail- Ruth stated she has little time to check ABBA E-Mail on Hotmail. She has asked for a volunteer to take that chore over.

-Geocities- Geocities still has a free site. The pay sites are optional. If there is too much traffic, Geocities will close the site down. Discussion took place on the movement of the ABBA site. Movement of the site would be detrimental, at this time, since people know how to find it now.

Brags and Announcements:

Kristine Crawford, CA - Sue bragged that Kristine has been made head of the Search and Rescue team for the Alameda County Sheriff. We all know what kind of dogs she owns. Big Congrats Kristine! See her website at: http://www.forpitssake.org/fpspopup.html

Maureen - has signed Sierra up for Agility and Tommy for Novice obedience.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:56 PM EST.

Respectfully Submitted,

Peggy Doster
