The first semester has been an interesting one. Like everyone time has been a major factor since I do not always have common time to meet with my mentees. I began by working with 5 people, 3 of which I have been working extensively with. Most of them need to learn more basic skills - spreadsheets, email, internet, grades, and even word processing. They know the basics to get by but need to learn more to make their life easier. The one thing they all wanted to do immediately was to learn iMovie so that was our first workshop.

We spent a half day working on iMovie and everyone had an interest in learning this software because they could see the value with incorporating it into their own curriculum or even for personal use. After the workshop, two of the teachers worked with one of their classes and used iMovie as a project. The students loved creating movies. The only problem which we found was that it took time to complete these projects but the students seemed to learn the subject matter. I know the teachers I am working with said that one 1/2 day workshop was not enough for them to “master” this software so I did work with their classes during this project.

The second 1/2 day workshop was an agenda of various computer skills & programs which the teachers wanted to learn or relearn because they never mastered the software entirely. It ranged from questions they had regarding email, explorer, databases, spreadsheets, drawing, iMovie, etc. We began and only covered one topic but they mastered it and were very excited because they knew they could help anyone else in the school. In fact one of the teachers (who is a beginner with technology) went the next day and taught another teacher on the staff what she learned. I was hoping that we would cover more during this workshop but everyone agreed that it was important for them to walk away mastering one item than it would have been to walk away learning multiple things but not feeling comfortable using it when they went back to their room. Plus it gave them satisfaction being able to now answer questions by others with confidence.

I would say for the 2nd quarter of school I have spent most of my time concentrating on working with the 2 mentees who were incorporating iMovie into a project. I would meet with them to discuss the project, discuss the assignment, show the students how to use iMovie, work with the students, etc. The teachers are trying to learn iMovie but didn’t feel comfortable teaching the students right now. I am hoping that if they do this project again that they will feel more comfortable demonstrating it. With the other mentees I have been working with them on various computer programs.
