Subject: $140 in credit from "Real Networks Gaming Arcade"

So, AT&T @Home was shocked... SHOCKED when Excite@Home went bankrupt. So much so that we in Fort Collins were without our net connection for a week.

To "make it up" to us, they decided to give us $140 worth of garbage from Real Networks Gaming Downloads. Of course, you happen to need Real Player to get any of this stuff to work.

Real Player is an interesting bit of software. They developed a proprietary video format for streaming video on the web. They developed a free -- and registered!! -- player for that. So far, that's all well and good.

But the engineers and marketing masterminds at Real.com decided to, by default, attach every single system process to the Real Player for you when you installed their software. More, they arranged their little installer to make so that you would be forced to click ON EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN CHECKBOX for extensions like .mp3, .avi, .mov and .fuckingjpg -- stuff you probably already had a decent player for.

That is the single most indefensible thing any software installer has ever done. It's possible that subsequent versions of their program had changed that around, but for Real Player 7.0... welcome to hell.

So it is with no regret that in this, an open letter to AT&T @Home I state clearly, "fuck off and die. Excite couldn't figure out how to run a fucking monopoly and neither will you. Bullets through the heads of your executives, Enron-Style, will be the only acceptable makeup gift."

God bless!
