Really? Well, for one, it is the only way some people can come to grips with their existence on this planet, the only thing some people can grab hold of to keep their psyche, and their entire lives, from crashing down around them. So naturally, the human defense mechanism fights to the death (literally, in some cases) to protect this scaffolding.

Because if it turns out your invisible monster is NOT the right one, then you are totally screwed. So maybe if you can convince everyone else that THEIR invisible monster isn't the right one, you'll have nobody to attack you. And if they won't join you, beat 'em.

More interesting is humanity's inability to say: "I don't know."

Rather than admit that there's no way we could have the slightest idea what life is, how existence came into existence, and what (if anything) is running the show, let's all just make up some stupid crap about God (or in some cases, Gods) to explain everything.

Dummies.
