I was THE busboy at Bill O'Brien's Ships Inn in East Rockaway from the summer of 1960 through the spring of 1961. What a great place it was! ... Right there on the inlet canal with pleasure boats and small fishing boats passing by the day long ... folks sitting on the docks tending their crab traps and kids fishing for baby blue snappers. It's a scene frozen in time in my mind. Bill O'Brien was a good man and quite the entrepreneur. People would come in for his popular "all you can eat" steak, then go out for a show or party elsewhere and then come back for late night drinks and London Broil. He bought The White Cannon Inn that year. It was a landmark at the time which stood on the triangular shaped spit of land on Ocean Ave. across the canal from the East Rockaway Yacht Club. He renamed it Bill O'Brien's White Cannon Inn. I would on occasion work large parties there. I can see that it is gone now and Ships Inn is as well. I could go on and on with memories I have but I'm glad to see some other folks remember this charming place. Aronld B. Jr.
