Ladeez and gennulmen, it's time to get the tuxedo out of mothballs and attend this year's most glittering awards ceremony. Try not to trip over drug-addled Michael Barrymore (or his latest victims) as you make your way up the red carpet.

Gig of the year

Winner: The Strokes

Runner-up: Spiritualized

This year thekempton.com saw all the heavily hyped new bands - The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Music, Haven, The Coral, Starsailor - in front of between 30 and 300 people. In other words, we were into them before you, so there. Most of these were good, and so too were I Am Kloot, Cousteau and Elbow. Worst gig by some distance, in fact worst signed band ever, was Clearlake. Absolute dogshit, Eric. I am contractually obliged to say that the best gig by an unsigned band was Thee Virus House at some toilet venue somewhere.

Album of the year

Winner: Spiritualized - Let It Come Down

Runner-up: Elbow - Asleep At The Back

Not a vintage year. Mercury Rev's was good but not in the same league as its predecessor. After all the expectation, The Strokes's debut and The White Stripes' third were a little disappointing. However, there were excellent debuts from I Am Kloot, Mull Historical Society and Noonday Underground, and decent ones from Ed Harcourt, Matthew Jay and Tompaulin. There were also some great reissues from John Cooper Clarke, Love and Elliott Smith.

The winners of these awards will be putting "Voted best album of the year by thekempton.com" on their promotional material, believe me.
