Division 3:./... Lincoln City//2 ..... Hull City//1

New Lincoln City signing Ian Hamilton completed his free transfer from Notts County yesterday evening but it was too late to make him eligible for this local derby clash. Peter Gain and the injured Paul Morgan also missed this game, Tony Battersby and Steve Holmes were their replacements. As predicted by The Forgotten Imp in yesterdays's match preview, long-term injury victim Richard Logan made the subsitutes' bench.

Hull arrived at Sincil Bank on the back of a 4-0 defeat at bottom side Hartlepool and immediately it seemed that they were behind. With just ninety seconds gone Jason Barnett crossed for Dave Cameron to head home but the referee spotted an infringement and ruled the header out. Hull were grateful for the let-off but two minutes later it was the Imps thanking their lucky stars as Theo Whitmore smashed a header against the crossbar with Alan Marriott beaten.

In the 20th minute Hull's Gary Alexander broke free of the Lincoln defence before shooting at Marriott. Lincoln then created their own opportunity thorugh good passing football, Adam Buckley released Stuart Bimsom who located Tony Battersby. From his pass Ben Sedgemore controlled the ball but shot over Matt Glennon's goal.

For a side aiming for promotion Hull failed to produce the chances to test the Imps, probably the best was a mishit cross by ex-Lincoln player Lawrie Dudfield which Marriott had to gather. On the half hour mark Lincoln took the lead when Buckley crossed for Cameron who scored to continue his claim as the long-term strike partner to Lee Thorpe.

Just before half-time both Sedgemore and Cameron picked up injures courtesy of Hull's players. In Sedgemore's case he was unable to continue for second half and had to be replaced by Mark Camm.

Hull's manager Brian Little must have read the riot act to his players as they emerged fired up for the second half. Dudfield's 50th minute shot was superbly saved by Marriott while another occassion saw Rob Matthews volley straight at Marriott.

Against the run of play Lincoln doubled their lead in the 64th minute through Battersby. Camm played from the back to Cameron who crossed for the unmarked Battersby to score his first league goal of the season. The second goal stunned Hull into action and only saves from Marriott prevented Hull gaining a foothold back into this match.

Robert Betts came on in the 79th minute for last appearance before returning to Coventry City on Monday. Hull's loanee Paul Tait, who was once recommended to Lincoln City before joining Crewe, came on in place of Dudfield.

Four minutes of injury time was announced by the fourth official and with it Hull intensified the pressure. A poor goal was given away in the 92nd minute by Lincoln when Alexander sent in a low drive through a crowd of players for 2-1. Despite playing another two minutes of time, Hull were unable to find the equaliser as Lincoln's defence stood firm.
