Subject: Nucc's Question Regarding The Tetragrammation Answered

Subject: A KJV question

If you notice in the King James Version of the Scripture, in the OT the word LORD is sometimes printed with all letters capitalized and sometimes just the "L", Lord, is capitalized. Does anyone have an idea why? Someone has asked me the question.

I can’t address the specifics about the KJV’s use because I rarely use it. However, As in other ancient documents, the precise meaning of the biblical texts is sometimes uncertain. This is more often the case with Hebrew and Aramaic texts than it is with the Greek text. Although archeological and linguistic discoveries in this century aid in the understanding of difficult passages, some uncertainties remain.

In regard to the name YHWH, commonly referred to as the Tetragrammation, the translators adopted the devise used in MOST ENGLISH VERSIONS of rendering that name as “LORD” in capital letters to distinguish it from Adonai, another Hebrew word rendered “Lord,” for which small letters are used. Where ever the two names stand together in the Old Testament as a compound of the name God, they are rendered as “Sovereign Lord.”
