Your statements are generally correct, however we must consider the difference between the western and eastern mind.

The west (Romanism) has been the one interested in defining every jot and tittle of faith to the point that it is no longer faith in God, but faith in "correct doctrine".

The east is much more "lenient" (for a lack of better word) to believe on faith and chalk things up to divine mystery. Thus it is the DEFINITION of the Trinity that was established with the Nicene Creed, and in effort to defend "correct doctrine" from the Arians.

The reason it may seem that early Apostles and Church fathers didn't believe in the "trinity" is b/c:

#1- the term didn't exist
#2- it wasn't important to define God in human terms
#3- they accepted God on His terms and weren't as concerned in defining to the nth degree

The trinitarian doctrine is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, tis true, however it has been in the limelight of controversy since its inception-from the filoque dispute to a downright dismissal of God- in three persons.

Even many protestants' creeds state that the doctrine of the Trinity was where believers have their "comfortable dependence". If this is the case, much to their chagrin, their comfortable dependence is upon the Church, her creeds and councils! I say, NOT SO!

Personally I feel to attach one's faith to a man-made "law" is dangerous. Everyone has their own interpretation of the "trinity" believers and unbelievers alike, thus the definition has done nothing more than to divide on a small issue. I have found that most people who deny that God is Spirit, Son and Father, usually deny Christ. I believe in God. I know he is Spirit, Father, and Son. How exactly he is all that and remains one at the same time is too much for my finite mind to understand. It truly is a mystery. If you dare say anything about how you think it is accomplished you will be immediately labeled as "wrong". I've stated that I beleive the idea of my being a mother, daughter and wife at the same time is analogous of God's differing "persons". Wog then told me that was "modular" which at the time I'd never heard of. I still think that's the best answer I can imagine-not being divine.

The problem with trying to define it is that you must then explain it! LOL! And then if someone doesn't "get it" they then are idiots, liars, reprobate apostates. Man placing his intellect above all else so that he can be "right" and serve that god of theirs- "correct doctrine". It's a man-made god.

Doesn't mean the concept is wrong, it just means trying to put human terms to a divine mystery causes dissension. Sincerely :)
