hi Mondo,

>What I don't get, is why does punishment have to be >eternal damnation ?

I believe the "eternal" bit is because I believe that we were created to be eternal beings - in other words that there is a part of human beings that survives death, and it *has* to go somewhere.

>I mean, I think God could get the message across in less >extreme ways. By showing you the error of your ways, by >showing the damage your behavior had on others .. you >would feel shame. A shame of knowing your true nature when >you were in the flesh. It might be sufficient, IMV.

Mondo, I believe that is actually what God *does* want to do with each of us - and I believe that He tries to, through the conscience which He has placed within each of us (IMO) - but the thing is, in order to hear Him, we would have to be listening, and often we enjoy wrong things too much to be paying any heed to any inner voice, and our "ears" are closed (or have our own fingers stuffed in them).

>My thoughts on the Bible is that some parts of it appear >to have been written for the express purpose of >terrorizing people.

Which parts were you thinking of here, Mondo?
