I thought it went something like, Jesus stands in for "us" on the Day of Judgement.

That if we were judged invididually, we'd all be screwed. But, since Jesus stands in for us, we're saved, as he is/was without sin ?

Obviously God doesn't make us sinless in reality. It's a symbolic sinlessness ..
