Jesus warned against going to this place more than any other subject He talked about. Because we don't know everthing about eternity we do know the hell is indeed equivalent of what we know in this life is "a place". In the Greek, it is Scripturally and graphically identified as a place of punishment. Gehenna is a transliteration of the OT expression of the "valley of Hinnom" a ravine on the southside of Jerusalem. The Jews were aware of this valley, and in their disobedient past it was the center of idolaturous worship. Children were burned there as an offering to the god Molech (2 Chron. 28:3, 33:6, & Jer. 32:35. Jeremiah called it the "Valley of Slaughter" because people were going to be killed there as part of God's judgment (Jer. 7:31-34). Later it became the continuous fire burning rubbish dump of Jerusalem. So this place has a history that Jesus used to describe the place of eternal punishment.
