We are the family of a Vietnam casualty, Sgt. Carl Ussery, a FO and Recon Sergeant attached to HHC 1/5 Cav from 1/77 Artillery - in Vietnam from December 1967 to September 28, 1968. When first notified, we were told Carl had been Hostile Missing for 5 days - later status changed from missing to dead, and reported as killed and recovered at the time of a helicopter crash, September 28, 1968. We recall Carl mentioning being attached to various units, i.e. 1/7 Cav, 1/9 Cav - and have located a picture in Vietnam Magazine, book review section, April 1991 - with the American soldier certainly appearing to be Carl - in which there is reference to the soldier being with 11th Armored Cav.

In part, the picture caption reads "A member of the 11th Armored Cavalry and an ARVN soldier interrogate a Viet Cong suspect captured at Long Binh......." The picture would have been taken during 1968. The 11th Armored Cav also shows up in representation on the helicopter accident investigative board into Carl's helicopter crash incident, ordered two months after the crash, authorized under AR 15-6. We are needing to verify any connection with Carl ever being attached to 11th Armored Cav.

Our question - Does anyone recall instances in which Forward Observers from 1/5 Cav - or men from other Cav units, any units - were attached to 11th Armored Cav at times - or do you recall any specific incidents in which NVN prisoners were captured in Long Binh, 1968? Any information appreciated.
