I took AIT in Ft Bliss, TX in the spring of '65 after which I was assigned to B Btry 6/56 Arty also in Ft Bliss. During September '65 we got orders to ship out. We took a troop train to Oakland,CA and embarked on the USMS Hugh H. Gaffney to cross the Pacific to points unknown. We were hoping for Thailand but hopes were dashed when we were issued Vietnamese translation books. We spent a memorable day on Okinawa. After tearing up that place we went through a typhoon in the South China Sea and off loaded some 1st Cav troops in Na Trang. We then sailed to Vong Taw. In the space of 15 minutes we were on a ship, landing craft, duce and a half (truck) and a C-130 plane airborne. The Army could do some amazing things if it put its mind to it. They put us in an elephant grass field for a few days. Unforunately the foliage grew in a foot of water. The mosquitos only had a few inches to fly to get to nice warm red blood. They thankfully moved us to the edge of Camp Ray home of 1 of the 503rd 173rd Airborne Brigade (Sep. I made friends with a bunch of guys from there. I served in country, during which i had a great R&R in Bangkok, until 26 Sept. 1966. (all this is taken from the top of my head 37 years after the fact. the spelling may be suspect but the facts are true) I have some slides of the camp. I'd be more than happy to help in any way on your book. Its beyond me why anyone would want to write about HAWKs in Viet Nam but knock yourself out. John
