Nikita plopped down into her chair, her brow drawn together in a tight frown. Originally she had planned to take the day off and spend it with Michael, but that changed when she learned Stephen was back in town.

Rose, watching her from the door, arched one brow and folded her arms across her chest.

“I take it you know Stephen’s back in town.”

Nikita sighed wearily. “Did he call here?”

Rose stepped into the office and closed the door behind her. She held out to Nikita a list of appointments. “About twenty minutes ago. He inquired when you would be back in town.”

“I’d forgotten about him.”

“Well that was quick.”

Nikita’s frown deepened. “I meant that I forgot that he was returning this month.” She sighed again and her thoughts turned to Michael. She’d been torn as to whether or not she should tell him who Stephen was. A part of her didn’t see any need to; Stephen, after all, was someone from her past and had no bearing on her and Michael’s relationship now, so why bother?

“I was wrong to let him talk me into keeping the ring. I should have made him take it back.”

Rose gave Nikita a sympathetic smile. “What would you like me to do, block his calls?”

“No.” Nikita shook her head. “I’ve treated him badly enough in the past. I should speak with him face to face.”

“Shall I set up a meeting between you two?”

After a few seconds, Nikita again shook her head. “That’s okay, Rose. I’ll take care of it myself.”
