After leaving the park, Nikita returned to her apartment. It was nearer than Michael’s apartment and she was feeling a need to be alone. Breaking up with Stephen had been easier than she anticipated but still exhausting. The corners of Nikita’s mouth turned downward into a frown. Well, technically she didn’t really just break-up with Stephen because she’d done that months ago. Today was more of a reaffirmation after-the-fact that they were officially over.

Nikita sighed. She would have been happier had Stephen taken his ring back too, but at least they had managed to part as friends. That was good because she really did like Stephen – she just didn’t love him. She hoped that one day he would find that woman for him, someone who could make him feel like she did when she was with Michael. And thinking of Michael, Nikita wondered where he was and what he was up to.

She called Rose up to let her know that she wasn’t returning to the office and then she dialed Michael’s number.

“Hey.” Nikita smiled. “It’s me.”

“Hi.”

It was amazing to her how just the sound of his voice could set her heart racing. “Are you busy?” she asked.

“I’m meeting one of my suppliers in about twenty minutes.”

“Oh.” Nikita sighed, disappointed. “I thought we might go out for a late lunch, but that’s okay. How about dinner tonight? I’ll treat.”

“I’m sorry, I can’t tonight,” Michael went on. “I probably won’t be free till late.”

The Gallery opening was less than two weeks away and so of course Michael’s schedule would be very busy until then. “Is there anything I can do?” Nikita offered.

“No. Thank you. Everything’s already being taken care of.”

Nikita’s brows puckered and she bit on her lower lip. Was she imagining it or did Michael sound a little… distant? No, she thought a moment later, shaking the thought from her head. He was just busy and preoccupied.

“All right,” she said, cheering up. “I’ll see you tonight?”

There was a pause on his end before he said, “If you want, but I don’t know what time I’ll be in.”

Nikita’s lips turned down at the corners. He was being distant.

“Michael, is there something wrong?” she asked, and she heard him give a weary sigh.

“Nothing’s wrong, Nikita,” he said, “I have to go. If you want to come over tonight, that’s fine. If you don’t, that’s fine too.”

Nikita blinked back her surprise, she drew her shoulders back. “All right,” she said, keeping her voice level, not wanting him to know the hurt his tone had inflicted. “Bye.”
