"So did he kiss you?"

Carla waited. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, her mouth curved into a smile. Nikita folded her arms defiantly.

"I'm not going to tell you that. It's none of your business!"

"Nicky…" Carla warned.

Nikita stalled. She folded her legs beneath her, raised her hand and brushed it over her hair, smoothing the long golden strands. Finally, sighing, she looked over at Carla. "No, we didn't kiss."

Carla's eyes narrowed for a second as she assessed Nikita's answer. Then, deciding that she was telling the truth, leaned back. Her disappointment was clearly written upon her face.

Nikita shifted again. She sat with her knees pulled up to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. There was a wistful look in her blue eyes. "I'm sorry I lied to you," she said softly. "I didn't mean to lie. I really did want you to meet him and I thought that since you two are both connected with the world of art, you'd get along."

"But I already have a boyfriend," Carla replied just as quietly. "Remember?"

"Chuck?" Nikita scoffed and looked away. "I still think you can do better than that, Carla. He's a jerk and you know it."

"Nicky…"

"Okay, okay. I'm sorry. I know you like him -- a lot."

Carla was silent. She knew that Nikita only had her best interests at heart but it still pained her that Nikita didn't get along with Chuck.

At her silence, Nikita leaned forward and held out her hand. "Come here."

Carla sat for several seconds, then stood and went to sit on the couch beside Nikita. She leaned back and Nikita wrapped her arms around her shoulders. "I'm sorry," she repeated, knowing she had hurt her friend's feelings.

Carla let out a breath of air. "It's okay."

They sat in comfortable silence for several seconds. Nikita leaned her head against Carla's. They'd been friends so long, they were like sisters and as such knew each other's secrets and likes and dislikes. There were many times when they disagreed -- sometimes heatedly -- but they could never remain angry at each other for long.

Wanting to change the subject, Nikita asked Carla, "Where'd you disappear to? I looked for you after Michael left but I couldn't find you."

"Mmm. I was with Chris." Carla sat up and turned around. She sat with her legs folded Indian style. The smile had returned to her face. "He is something else, isn't he?"

Nikita chuckled. "I saw you two dancing. You guys were great. I didn't know you could dance like that."

"I can't. It was Chris. Did you see him twirling me and all? God, that was fun!"

Carla jumped up and demonstrated some of the dance steps she'd learned. She hummed as she did so and Nikita leaned back and laughed out loud. Sitting down, Carla said, "I had fun tonight. I really did."

Nikita pulled her feet back up on the couch and hugged her knees to her chest again. She propped her chin on the top of her knees as a dreamy expression filled her eyes. "I had fun too."

"Oh?" Carla grinned. "Come on, tell me the truth. You really let Michael get away without kissing him?"

"Yes, I'm telling the truth," Nikita answered. She gave a little shrug. "I barely know him."

"I would have kissed him."

Nikita snorted. "Yeah, but I'm not you." She shifted uncomfortably. A frown formed on her face as Carla waited for her to articulate what it was she felt. "I'd just like to take things slow."

Carla reached over and gave Nikita's arm a reassuring squeeze. "There's nothing wrong with that."

"Thanks." Nikita took another deep breath. She tilted her head back, closed her eyes. In her mind she saw Michael's face and the image sent a tremor of desire coursing through her.

"You really like him."

Nikita opened her eyes and met Carla's gaze. "I don't know."

Her friend favored her with a crooked smile. "Be honest with yourself, Nicky."

Nikita groaned. "I'm trying to, Carla. It's just that, I've never felt this way before and it feels… strange. Scary."

"Oh, Nicky," Carla gently suggested, "maybe you're finally falling in love."

"Or," Nikita replied with a sheepish grin, "I could be just falling in lust."
