Michael drew her back into his embrace and held her there for a long time.

At last, calmed and a little embarrassed, Nikita sat up. Her hand lifted, brushing her hair back from her face. A shy smile
tugged at her lips. She wiped at her eyes. “Sorry about that,” she said, her voice husky still with emotion.

Michael raised his hand, his movement quiet and slow. He trailed a finger down the side of her face, marveling at the
softness. “Don’t apologize. It wasn’t easy for you to share that. I’m glad that you did.”

She checked, looking up into his eyes. “You must think I’m a blubbering fool.” And Michael smiled, his gaze full of an
emotion that made her heart beat faster.

“I think you’re beautiful,” he confessed. His fingers feathered their way down her neck, to her shoulder and arms. “When I
was away, all I could think of was returning here to you. Thoughts of you distracted me endlessly and I lived to hear your
voice whispering my name at night.”

Her brows quirked with surprise, and she leaned forward, a smile lighting her eyes. “Such romance, Michael. Are you trying
to seduce me?”

Warm breath mingled, lips caressed then deepened into a melting kiss. “Yes,” he answered honestly, as his hands slipped
under her shirt and up warm skin to cup her breasts. “Is it working?”

“Mmmm. Oh yes,” she sighed.

“Michael Samuelle?” Paul frowned at his daughter from behind his desk. The muscles alongside his mouth tightened. “How
long have you two been… seeing each other?”

Nikita crossed her long legs and shrugged her shoulders. “Before Christmas, after Birky’s party. Somewhere along there,” she
answered.

A sigh escaped Paul Wolfe’s lips, his eyes closing briefly. “I suppose this means the answer to Stephen’s proposal is no.”

“It always was, Daddy. I told him and you that from the beginning.”

“But he asked you to give it some time, isn’t that what you told me?”

“He did,” Nikita conceded, shoulders beginning to stiffen. She met her father’s ungiving gaze. “But that was his decision.
Even if I waited a whole year my answer to Stephen would not change. I don’t love him.”

Paul was silent, barely suppressing another sigh. His voice, when he spoke, was resigned. “And do you love Michael?”

Nikita stood. Silently she circled round the desk and knelt at her father’s side. Her hand covered his on the armrest as she
implored him. “I know you’re only concerned for me. And that you only want to see me happy. I don’t know if I love
Michael,” she confessed, “but I know that I’ve never felt this way about any other man I’ve been with.”

Her father’s eyes gradually softened, his fingers turned over to grip hers. “That’s the first you’ve admitted as much,” he said,
a slow smile forming. “I do want you to be happy, Nicky, you know that. I thought you’d found that with Stephen.” He
exhaled sharply, a worried frown pulling at the corners of his lips once more. “Now what do I tell him?”

Nikita’s brows raised. “What do you mean?” She waited as Paul’s frown slanted into a half-smile.

“I’m the one that advised him to take the position in California. He came to ask me for my opinion on how to win your hand.
I told him to stop pursuing you. To give you space and time to miss him. You know, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’,
and all that.” Paul snorted, “Well your heart grew fonder all right, just not for him.”

Nikita chuckled as she stood and then leaned over and dropped a kiss on her father’s forehead. “It’s a good thing you didn’t
go into the cupid business, Daddy. We’d be broke.”

Paul smiled reluctantly. He raised his hand and pointed a warning to her retreating back. “Yes, well I’m still your father,
young lady.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“And I want to meet, Michael!”

"You've already met him."

"Well I want to meet him again!" he said, his voice rising.

Nikita smiled. “Yes, Father. Is there anything else?”

“Make it soon. Dinner, tomorrow night.”

Nikita stopped at the door and looked over her shoulder. The smile lingered in her eyes. “I’ve already set it up. I’ll see you
then. Bye, daddy. Love you.”

As the door clicked close, Paul heaved another deep breath. Would that girl never settle down?
