Chapter 26

Carla woke at some point in the night with an urgent need to go to the bathroom. She sat up slowly, one hand going to her head. God it felt as if she’d been hit with a baseball bat. Pushing the blankets aside she stood up, eyes closed, took a few steps and promptly collided with a wall and fell back onto the floor.

“What the…?”

It took her a few seconds to realize that the room she was in was not her own. In fact, as she looked around, she couldn’t say that she recognized the room at all. Where was she? The last thing she remembered was being at a bar. Soon other memories emerged, including the reason why she’d gotten drunk in the first place. Carla sighed as her eyes welled with tears. She wiped at her eyes angrily and imagined the hateful things she’d like to do to Chuck if she ever saw him again. Her anger though lasted only a few seconds before she was again crying from the heartache she felt. Carla wiped at her eyes again and began to stand up. There were other more pressing matters that she needed to attend to, like finding out whose home she was in, and where the nearest bathroom was – quick.

Chris had been asleep when he’d heard a loud thump coming from the direction of the bedroom. A moment later he heard a groan, and then what sounded like a whimper. He sat up quickly, untangling his feet from the sheet, and made his way to the bedroom. As he entered the doorway, Carla gave a startled cry. Surprise registered on her face as she recognized him. “Chris?” The two stood staring at each other for several seconds. Chris was the first to speak.

“Are you alright?”

Carla nodded slowly, her expression still dazed. She snapped out of it a moment later. “I – I need to use the bathroom…”

Chris stepped to the side and pointed. Carla rushed by him and a moment later the bathroom door slammed closed. Left alone, Chris sighed and turned to the living room. The clock read twenty minutes past four a.m. Thankfully, Section would be closed that day and he didn’t have to worry about going in to work. When Carla emerged from the bathroom several minutes later, Chris was in the kitchen. He looked up as she entered the living room. She had washed her face and tried to comb her hair but its unruly curls stuck out at every angle. “How are you feeling?” he asked.

She smiled shyly. “To be honest, I’m a little confused.”

“You don’t remember how you got here?”

“Among other things.”

Chris poured a glass of orange juice that he handed to her. “I have aspirin if you want.”

Carla thanked him and sat down as Chris went into the bedroom to get some for her. He lowered himself into the chair across from her and waited. Carla finished drinking and then sat back and closed her eyes. After a while, she opened them again and looked at him. “I still can’t figure out how I ended up here. The last thing I can recall is being at a club.” A frown formed on her face. “I didn’t try to pick you up, did I? God, I’d be so embarrassed. I want you to know that I don’t usually do this, get drunk, I mean.”

Chris smiled. “No,” he assured her. “You didn’t try to pick me up. I was out earlier with Nikita and she forgot her phone in my car. You called her cell and I answered.”

“And so you came and got me.” Carla nodded, comprehension dawning upon her. “I’m really sorry, Chris. Like I said, I don’t usually do this. I was just really upset by something that happened earlier and, I went a little crazy.” She didn’t look at him as she spoke and there was a tremor to her voice.

“Don’t worry about it,” he said gently. “We all go a little crazy once in a while.”

Carla huffed and folded her arms. She was close to tears. “Yeah, well, not everyone is probably as stupid as I was.”

Chris remained silent, offering her the opportunity to talk if she wanted, but Carla didn’t say anything further. After a moment, with tears streaming down her face, she stood up. “Thank you for picking me up, Chris. I’ll call a cab and get out of your hair now. I mean, well, you know what I mean,” she said.

Chris got to his feet also and took a step towards her. “Don’t go.”

“No,” she replied. “I’ve already imposed on you enough.”

“Its no trouble, Carla, really. Besides, it’s late and it’s cold outside. You can stay here till morning and then I’ll make you some breakfast and drive you home.”

“But you have to sleep on the couch. I can’t do that to you.”

Chris smiled at her. “Okay, you twisted my arm. I’ll join you on the bed.”

Carla laughed softly, and then she sighed as her mood became somber again. “I wish all guys were as nice as you. That would make life so much easier.”

Chris waited a second, and then he said softly, “Stay the night, Carla. It’s almost morning anyway, and I don’t mind sleeping on the couch.”

She thought about it a moment and then, feeling better, she accepted his offer.
