“How about this one?” Carla asked, as she pointed to a small Christmas tree. Her eyes lit up as she turned and waited for Chris. It was almost 11 o’clock in the morning and she had spent an enjoyable morning with him. There were other things she needed to do, like explain to her family why she had had to cancel her trip at the last minute, but doing so right now would only stir up emotions she wasn’t ready to confront yet. She had no idea where Chuck was and, frankly, she didn’t really care. Carla hoped he was having a miserable time. In fact, more than miserable, she hoped he was having a down right s**** Christmas! It was spiteful of her, she knew, but that was how she felt.

Chris didn’t seem to mind having her around and, right now, she really needed someone to be nice to her. Chris was a friend, he was kind, and most importantly he didn’t ask her any questions. That was the very reason she didn’t call Nikita and had asked Chris not to mention to her that she was still in town. There would be time after Christmas to fill Nicky in on all the sordid details of her break-up with Chuck.


Chris came up beside Carla, a frown furrowing his brow. “You really don’t have to do this,” he said, and Carla flashed him a cheerful smile.

“I know, but I want to. I can’t believe you don’t have one at your place. I thought everyone did.”

“I didn’t see much use in it,” Chris admitted. “I’m not home that often and, well, living alone, there was very little point in it.”

Carla shook her head. “Everyone should have a Christmas tree, even if you live alone.” She tilted her head to one side. “You could invite friends over and have a Christmas dinner, open presents,” she suggested. Chris didn’t answer. He didn’t have all that many close friends and the ones he did have, he was sure, already had plans for the evening.

Carla leaned toward him, still smiling, and she said in a not-so-quiet whisper, “You could ask me to dinner.”

Chris blinked and he shifted a little on his feet. “Would you like that?” he asked, hesitantly.

“Sure!” Carla beamed another smile at him. “I know! Let’s put up more than a tree. Let’s decorate your whole apartment! We can buy some candles, and ribbon, oh and you’ve got that great window! I can paint a nativity scene on it. This’ll be great!”

Chris wasn’t sure he liked the idea of his apartment being all spruced up in ribbons and such, but his heart warmed at Carla’s cheerful mood and willingness to spend the day with him. Of all Christmas presents, he couldn’t ask for anything more.
