Nikita’s mouth dropped open as she stared at her best friend. Carla and Chris?! How in the world did that happen? “Wait a minute.” Nikita shook her head as if to clear it of all the late breaking news Carla had just dumped on her, and began to carefully consider each piece bit by bit. “So you and Chuck are finished?”

Carla, looking calm as she sat across the table and sipped her latte, nodded. “Yep.”

“And you two didn’t go to Chicago to meet your family?”

“Me and Chuck? No. We broke up, or rather he dumped me two hours before the flight was supposed to leave.”

Nikita’s brows arched with surprise. “And you’re okay with that?”

Carla shrugged nonchalantly. “It was inevitable, you said it yourself, Chuck and I just aren’t made for each other.”

Nikita snorted. “Yeah, but did you ever listen to me?”

“Hmm,” Carla smiled. “Some things have to be drilled in before it begins to really gets through this thick skull of mine.”

“Ha!” Nikita said, and rolled her eyes. “More like slammed in! But that still doesn’t explain how you ended up with Chris of all people.”

“Hey, Chris is a nice guy,” Carla defended, and her mouth formed into a pout.

“I know that, and I’m not saying that I don’t like him. I do. A lot! But, still, you and him?” Nikita paused and took a deep breath. “I never would have guessed.”

“Well don’t make it sound like we’re getting married or anything like that,” Carla said. “We’re just friends.”

“Friends, yeah, right,” Nikita huffed. “That’s how it always starts.” Carla gave her a wounded look.

“You think I’m not good enough for Chris?” she asked, and Nikita was immediately remorseful.

“Oh, honey, I’m sorry. No, that’s not what I meant at all.” She reached across the table and covered Carla’s hand with her own. “I’m just surprised, that’s all. I’m sorry.”

“I know I’ve made mistakes, and its not like Chris and I are dating or anything, we’re just friends. But if it bothers you…”

“No.” Nikita shook her head. “Carla, it doesn’t bother me that Chris and you have become friends. I think that’s a good thing, you two would be good for each other. You’ve seen for yourself what a great guy he is, and he would treat you how you deserve to be treated.”

“He is great,” Carla agreed, “but I don’t know that I’m ready for anything more than friendship right now. After Chuck, I don’t want to get involved with anyone too soon.” Carla looked inquiringly at Nikita. “So you really don’t mind?”

“Why would I mind?” Nikita said, smiling.

“Well, since you two work together and have been friends for a long time, I just thought that maybe it might seem kind of weird to you.”

“It is weird,” Nikita replied, “but in a good way. You two haven’t kissed yet, have you?”

“Why?”

“Because then that would really be weird,” Nikita said, laughing. “I think I’d start laughing every time I looked at Chris.”

“Don’t you dare!” Carla growled, and Nikita laughed even harder. “I swear, if you embarrass Chris, I’ll… I’ll… I’ll tell that French guy of yours that you’re two timing him!”

Nikita laughed so hard, her cheeks were beginning to hurt. Carla, never able to remain mad at her long, slowly began to smile. She picked up her napkin and threw Nikita with it. Regaining her composure, Nikita said:

“I promise I’ll try and not to laugh around Chris, but if you two ever go to bed, you’d better not tell me any details.”

“I told you, we’re just –“

Friends! I know, I know,” Nikita nodded, and then she pointed a warning finger towards Carla. “But remember, that’s what I said about Michael, and look where we are now.”

“Speaking of which, where is Michael?” Carla asked. “Has he returned from France yet?”

“No,” Nikita sighed wistfully. “He doesn’t get back till the second.”

“Of January? So you’re not even going to spend New Years eve together? That’s terrible!”

“I know,” Nikita replied, her mood sobering. “I don’t know that it’s going to work out between us, Carla, and I hate that. Michael’s the first guy that I really like, and he lives half the world away from me. Is this what our relationship is going to be like, a weekend here and there?”

“Well you can keep in touch by telephone.”

Nikita made a snorting sound. “We have, believe me, but,” she sighed again, “it’s not enough, Carla. I want him here, now!”

Carla studied her friend closely. Her voice, filled with surprise, was gentle. “Nicky Wolfe, are you falling in love?” she asked.
“Me?” Nikita stared wide-eyed at Carla. “Fall in love? Did you forget, I’m the one that never falls in love.”

“Never?” Carla asked, smiling. She leaned forward and said in a sing-song voice, “I think you are!”

Nikita frowned, her shoulders sagged in defeat as she admitted in a tiny voice, “I think I am too.”
