Chapter 20 (edited)

There were nearly forty other people in the room but Nikita was aware of only one ~ Michael. She followed a half step behind him, her fingers entwined with his. The lights were low, the music soft, and as he led her to a secluded spot in the middle of the floor, Nikita gave a little sigh.

It had always been important to her to leave some measure of emotional space between herself and the man she was dating. It made it easier to break things off if the relationship became too demanding. But she didn’t feel that way with Michael. They were still very new to each other, and yet, she felt as if they’d known each other all their lives.

It was a silly notion really. One that Nikita knew didn’t make sense. Apart from the bits of his life that Michael had revealed about himself and what she’d read in his file or been told by Walter, she knew little else about him.

Michael stopped and turned. He held his arms out, his eyes watching her. Nikita went easily into his arms. She closed her eyes briefly as his arms enfolded and drew her close.

They were nearly the same height, their eyes level. Her heart beat rapidly in her chest, the pounding of it filling her ears till she could scarcely hear the music they swayed to. She could feel his strong thighs as they brushed against hers. His arm at her back held her securely, pressed her lips lightly to his. With each breath she took, her breasts pushed against the solid warmth of his chest. They were dancing far too close for new acquaintances, but God help her, Nikita longed to be even closer.

Could it be, she wondered? Could this be love? She’d heard of love at first sight but surely that was just a fairy tale. No such thing existed in real life. Love, true love, came slowly. It was something that had to be nurtured. Right?

Michael watched the play of emotions on her face. Her eyes were so expressive. So blue. Before he realized what he was doing, he found himself caressing her face. His thumb brushed softly over her face.

Nikita swallowed, her breath caught in her throat. The music faded, the people around them disappeared; it was just her and Michael. “How... how long before the boat docks?” she whispered.

His eyes smiled at her. “Not soon enough, I think.”

She gave a small moan and closed her eyes and leaned forward till her forehead pressed against his. The tip of her nose touched his, their lips a mere breath apart. This was such sweet torture, she thought. His breath was warm upon her face. Just a slight turn of her head and her nose touched his. With her lips, she could feel the corner of his strong mouth. Michael turned toward her, his eyes darkening with emotion as Nikita leaned forward and caught his lower lip with her own. Gently, she kissed him. Once, and then again. It was tentative, exploratory, wondrous and delicious all at once.

Michael swallowed. He struggled to keep his breathing even but it was difficult. Nikita was so soft and warm in his arms, reminding him of just how long it'd been since he'd held a woman close like this. The scent she wore was sweet, light and enticing. It made him want to burrow his face into the curve of her neck in search of its source. Was it behind her ear? Over the vein pulsing unsteadily at the base of her neck? Or maybe she had dabbed it lower in the valley between her breasts? He groaned inwardly at the realization that there was still another good thirty or forty minutes before the boat docked and he'd have any real chance of finding the answer out.

"Nikita," he whispered, breathing her name against her lips.

She opened her eyes, blinked a few times. A slow blush crept up her neck to her cheeks. As she started to pull away though, Michael tightened his arm around her waist. "Have I told you how beautiful you are?" he asked.

She searched his face, desire and fear filling her eyes. “Michael,” she said, her voice low, “I... I don’t want you to think that I...”

He leaned forward and caught her mouth in a long tender kiss that scattered all her thoughts.

“Oh damn,” she said, when he pulled away. He blinked, and then smiled when she tightened her hold around his neck and dragged him back for another kiss. “We’ll go slow,” she whispered.

“Okay.”

Pulling back, she looked into his eyes. “No promises? We’ll just take it one day at a time.”

Michael nodded, his fingers caressing her through the thin material of her dress. “Agreed.”
