Chapter 25 A:

Chris turned the car around and headed back uptown to the address that Carla had given him. Actually it was Bob the bartender at a club called The Edge who had given him the address. Carla, it seemed, had wandered in several hours earlier, plopped herself down at the bar and ordered a bottle of vodka which she then proceeded to drink all by herself. “I think you should come and get her,” Bob said to Chris. “I don’t think she can make it home on her own.”

When Chris arrived at The Edge, he found Carla passed out at a table. He crouched down by her chair and shook her shoulder gently. Carla made a grumbling sound and tried to push him away. “Carla,” Chris called her name and shook her again. “Come on, let’s get you home.”

“Don’t wanna go,” she mumbled.

“Yes, you do,” he said gently. “Come on. Put your arm around me. There you go.” Chris held her up as she leaned heavily against him. He grabbed her purse with his other hand and then walked her slowly out to his car. She was asleep before he even buckled her seat belt. Getting back in behind the wheel, he sat and thought what to do with her. He had no idea where she lived and she was in no condition to tell him. Chris considered taking her over to Nikita’s, but then, remembering how tired Nikita had been when he dropped her off, decided that wasn’t a very good idea either. He turned to look at Carla sleeping beside him and his heart went out to her. He could see by her smudged makeup that she’d been crying. What had happened, he wondered?

After another few seconds, Chris turned the engine on and steered the car out into the street. Twenty minutes later he pulled into the parking stall in front of the loft where he lived. It took a little effort out of the car and inside. He took her directly into his bedroom and laid her out on his bed. Next he took off her shoes and then covered her up with his blanket. Carla didn’t wake once. Smiling, he left her to sleep while he grabbed a spare blanket and pillow and went back to the living room.

He left the door to the bedroom ajar so that he could hear her if she woke during the night but Chris strongly doubted she would. After depositing his blanket and pillow on the couch, he turned on the tv to watch the evening news as he entered into the kitchen and prepared a light dinner. An hour and a half later having eaten and showered, he checked in once more on Carla and then turned in for the night.
