Nikita looked at the clock again and tried not to think too much of the fact that Michael hadn’t called. She supposed, if she really wanted to, she could call him. What was there to hide? He already knew that she was crazy over him; hadn’t she been the one to ask him to spend the night? On the other hand, she thought with a frown, she still had her pride to think of. She’d never had to go chasing after a man before in her life and she wasn’t about to start doing so now, even if the man in question was Michael Samuelle.

With new determination Nikita set about doing her normal routine. She played some music lightly in the background as she undressed and went to shower. Afterwards she dressed in a pair of old cotton pajamas. They’d seen better days but they were a favorite of hers, soft and faded. She brought out the gifts she’d bought over the weekend and hidden in her closet and she laid them out on her bed. There was a Christmas CD she’d picked up the week before but hadn’t had the chance to really listen to. She put it on, a smile forming on her face as she danced her way back to the bed with ribbons and bright wrapping paper in tow. She was humming happily, if not a little off tune, when there came a knock at her door. It was so light, she didn’t hear it at first, but it grew louder and a tad more insistent. Nikita stopped what she was doing and instantly thought that it had to be Michael.

“I’m coming!” She scurried off the bed and rushed to the door. A quick peek through the peephole showed that her guess was right. Smiling, she opened the door. “Hi!”

Michael had his hand raised, ready to knock again when the door opened and Nikita stood before him. It had been a long and not particularly pleasant day for him. He’d spent most of the day on the phone with his home office in Paris. There was a problem with one of the shipments that he’d ordered for the New York gallery and the dealer was threatening to cancel the order altogether. It was serious enough of a problem that Michael decided he needed to get back to Paris and handle the situation himself. Besides, the work crew here in New York would be off for a few days and this would give him a chance to spend Christmas with Monique and her family. The only problem he saw in all this was that he had to tell Nikita. He had considered calling her over the phone to tell her that he had booked a seat on the red-eye out to Paris that night but decided to come over in person instead. Now that he was face to face with her, Michael was glad he had. He stepped into the apartment, closed the door behind him, and then smiled and leaned in to kiss Nikita. Her arms went up and around his neck, pulling him close as she deepened their kiss. Michael relished the moment; God it felt good to have her next to him. When she pulled away and smiled up at him, he felt all his troubles from earlier lighten.

“Were you in bed already?” he asked.

“No,” Nikita took his hand in hers. “Come in,” she invited, tugging at him.

“I can’t.” Michael regretfully explained to her his situation. He saw the disappointment in her face, he felt the same way.

“Oh well,” Nikita said, with an understanding sigh. “It can’t be helped. At least you’ll be able to see your sister and her family for Christmas, that’s good.”

Michael reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small flat box that was wrapped in gold paper and a small red ribbon. He handed it to her.

“For me?” Nikita asked, her brows raised.

“Open it on Christmas morning.”

Nikita’s mouth turned down at the corners. “This isn’t fair, Michael. I didn’t get a chance to get you anything. I was going to go shopping tomorrow.”

Michael cupped her face in his hands and turned her face gently up and he looked deep into her eyes. “Tell me that you’ll miss me,” he said, “that’s all the gift I want.”

Nikita smiled. She lifted her lips to his and gave him a long, passionate kiss. “I’ll miss you, Michael,” she said, and then hugged him tight.
