“Nikita, wait.”

Michael sighed inwardly as he heard the phone line disconnect. Regret filled him. He’d been too abrupt, his irritation over the situation concerning Stephen Caldwell revealed in his tone. He hung up the phone on his side and then sat staring at the wall in his office, a frown marring his forehead.

Nikita had sounded happy and eager to speak with him, so different from the silent mood she’d been in that morning as she left his apartment early. He had been looking for a way to bring up the subject of Stephen Caldwell again and particularly if it was true that Stephen had proposed marriage.

Michael didn’t doubt the information Chris had reluctantly provided him on Stephen Caldwell. What did bother him –and it surprised Michael to discover that he felt this way- was how quickly Nikita had gotten over Stephen and moved on with him.

Chris said that Nikita had known Stephen close to two years and had dated for almost that same amount of time. Obviously the two had come away from the relationship with two entirely different perspectives; Stephen had wanted to get married and Nikita hadn’t. What if, Michael thought, his frown deepening, if the same outcome should happen to him and Nikita?

He knew that Nikita’s career was important to her, and Chris had hinted that that was part of the reason Nikita had been reluctant to settle down. As far as Michael could tell, Nikita was still very much engrossed in her father’s business. She had mentioned one night her father’s plan to expand into the Asian market and Michael remembered how enthused Nikita had been at the prospect of helping set that branch up. The idea had bothered him at the time though he had made no mention of it to her. Michael was happy for her and for Section’s continued success, but he had other plans and he wanted it to include Nikita.

Michael was thirty-four years old and, having found the measure of success he wanted in the art world, was ready to move on to the next stage of his life. Being around Monique and her family the past summer, especially little Michel, had begun him thinking of what it would be like to have his own family.

Michael heaved another sigh and closed his eyes. Simone had loved children. If she had lived they would be married by now and have had one or two little ones of their own.

With a shake of his head, Michael turned his thoughts back to the work before him as he pushed thoughts of Nikita aside. He’d speak with her that night and clear the air between the two of them, he decided. But that night when Michael entered his apartment, he was disappointed to find that it was completely dark. Nikita hadn’t come over.

Michael closed the door and turned on the lights. He’d been looking forward to coming home and finding her here, he’d even planned out a slow seduction as part of his apology. But all of that was for naught it seemed.

He recalled his words to her over the phone, “If you come over, that’s fine; if not, that’s fine too.”

“Fool,” Michael berated himself silently. “Now she’s probably angry at you.”
