Michael lay in bed reading. Every few minutes he glanced at the clock on the bedside table. It was past ten o’clock and there was no sign of Nikita. Usually if she wasn’t able to come over she would call and let him know. There had been no phone call this night.

He considered calling her and trying to explain his earlier mood but there was a part of him of him that didn’t want to. Ever since he’d become aware of Stephen Caldwell’s proposal, Michael had begun to rethink his own relationship with Nikita.

Chris said that Nikita had dated Stephen for almost two years and in the end she had turned his proposal down. Why, Michael wondered, with a deepening frown, had she stayed with Stephen for so long if she never intended to marry him? He knew, of course, that dating someone over an extended period of time didn’t necessarily mean that marriage would be the next step, but still…

Michael sighed and closed the book he’d been reading and placed it on the bedside table. What if, he wondered, he was another Stephen to Nikita? He was making quite a few sacrifices in order to be here in New York and close to Nikita. What would he do if after a year or two Nikita was still not ready for marriage? Was he willing to wait that long? Furthermore, by his leasing an apartment in New York, Michael realized that he was giving her the false impression that he was willing to possibly live here. New York City was nice but it wasn’t home to him. He had no intention of settling here permanently. He couldn’t! His business was headquartered in Paris, the majority of his galleries and suppliers were in Europe. And then there was Monique to consider too. She was Michael’s only family and he didn’t want to live far away from her or the Samuelle family home. But would it be fair, Michael wondered, to ask Nikita to give up her home, her family and career when he wasn’t willing to do the same?

And then another thought occurred to Michael. How could he even consider that Nikita would give up all that if she wasn’t even willing to move in with him? It was a sobering thought and one that had nagged at Michael over the past few days. He couldn’t deny the physical attraction between them or the fact that he was falling in love with her, but what if that wasn’t enough?

Michael turned off the light and then laid back and stared into the darkness around him. He was acutely aware of the empty space beside him. But no matter how much he missed her, Michael stayed with his decision that a little breathing space was what they both needed right now.
