When did I become so indecisive?

Nikita heaved another heavy sigh, her brows knit in frustration as she rummaged through her closet. She had enough clothes to outfit a small army and yet she couldn't find anything suitable to wear for her date with Michael. She stopped and pulled out a long red sequined gown that had a plunging neckline. If Carla was there, Nikita was certain she'd more than likely recommend that gown. With a shake of her head, she returned the gown to its place. Michael would take one look at her in that outfit and think she was trying to come onto him. Not that he'd be wrong, Nikita thought, with a wry wrinkling of her nose. Still, it'd be nice if she weren't so obvious.

After another fifteen minutes, she turned away in defeat and plopped down on a nearby seat, regretting having turned down Carla's offer to go shopping the day before. What was it that was making her so anxious about this date?

Her brows arched and a frown formed on her face. Maybe that was the problem. Stop thinking of this as a date, she chastised silently. Think of it as going out with an old friend and be yourself. Don't worry about impressing Michael. Either it happens or it doesn't.

Nikita looked back towards her closet, her head cocked to one side. Hmm. Michael was taking her out on a dinner cruise. She'd been on those before and enjoyed them very much. The setting was nice, intimate enough for conversation, and she really did want to spend time talking with Michael and finding out more about his life. The food on the cruises was pretty good too and most had a piano player or small band to provide music.

Standing, she made her way slowly back to the closet and looked over her outfits. Her gaze settled upon a dress she had bought earlier in the year to wear to a benefit that she had ended up being unable to attend. It was the color of 'moonlight on sand' the salesman at the boutique had said, and Nikita had agreed. Not really gold or silver, tan or beige, the color was soft and shimmered in the light.

She took the dress out, held it up against her body as she turned to the mirror. Two thin straps served as sleeves, leaving her neck and shoulders bare, but the bodice was high enough that no cleavage showed. Comfortable but feminine.

She swirled the long skirt around, loving the way it hung loosely but followed every curve of her body when she moved.

Satisfied she had found the right dress to wear, Nikita laid it out carefully on the bed and proceeded to prepare for her evening.

Michael leaned against the railing and folded his arms across his chest. A frown creased his brow as he watched the cars and taxis pulling up to the dock. His thoughts were focused on the past, four years earlier. It was summer and he and Simone had rented a yacht and set sail for two weeks in the Mediterranean. Simone had loved the sea and, in his mind, Michael could still see her as she was that summer; tanned, happy, so full of life.

There was a tightening in his chest, the pain was like an old familiar companion now. He felt it every time he thought of Simone and realized she was gone from his life forever.

The tightening slowly ebbed and was replaced by a heaviness that weighed upon his spirit. He'd loved her so much and when she died, a part of him died with her.

Michael's thoughts returned to the present when he saw Nikita emerging from the last taxi that had pulled up. Straightening, he attempted to mentally shake himself free of those memories that still haunted him as he went down to meet Nikita.
