Author: Bruce Grant / Rick Melmoore
Subject: And It Begins

[The viewer is taken to what is becoming an increasingly
familiar sight: The bare ring surrounded by equally plain exercise equipment
inside Rick Melmoore's gym. However, this time, the ring is occupied. The man
who has come to be recognized as Bruce Grant now stands in a corner opposite a
rather tall, fairly muscular man wearing royal blue sweat pants and a cyan tank
top. Standing behind Grant, his arms draped over the top rope in typical
managerial fashion is Rick Melmoore himself, wearing, as would be expected,
green sweats and a white t-shirt. Grant himself is wearing what he would be,
should he be performing in an actual match.

However, that is not to say that this confrontation, although
less important perhaps, is any less strenuous than a match in the GWA or any
other federation would be. Melmoore suddenly shouts "Begin!" and the unnamed man
rushes at Grant. It would appear to be the first time that the two have sparred,
as any person familiar with the "opposing force as your force" and
counter-attack techniques in which Grant specializes would have known better
than to charge full ahead. As it is, Grant has little trouble hooking his
sparring partner's arm and twisting it while falling to the ground, causing the
man to do the same. Grant immediately brings his legs over the other's chest,
slamming his heels into the left side of his ribcage, while holding the right
arm between his legs, leaning back and yanking, at the same time applying
pressure to the dim mak point on the man's wrist, though, obviously with
less force. After a moment, Grant lets up, does a backward somersault and stands
away from the man, who staggers to his feet. Grant immediately capitalizes on
the opportunity, and brings him down once again, this time with a sharply
executed bulldog. Now, rather than waiting for his opponent to get to his feet
at his own pace Grant grabs him and pulls him to his feet, then between his
legs, bending to grab the man with both arms, just above his waist and lifts him
a full ninety degrees, then down in a perfectly executed piledriver, as only a
student of Rick Melmoore could perform.

Grant then covers his opponent, prompting Melmoore to enter
the ring and deliver the three count. Grant gets up off of the man's body, and
gives him a helping hand up to his feet. The two men meet in a hearty handshake,
and Melmoore tosses a towel to each of them. The three men engage in
conversation for a time, before the nameless individual exits through the ropes
and walks out of the gym. Melmoore and Grant follow him out of ring, going
between the top and middle ropes, and cross the gym floor to Melmoore's desk,
where they begin more important conversation.]

Rick: You look to be in better form than you were when you
left here, Bruce. You should be proud.

Bruce: Well, it's as you taught me, never stop trying to
better myself. Just too bad that Alan couldn't have stayed longer. I had quite a
few maneuvers that I wanted to try.

Rick: Well, you'll have a chance to do that in a few days,
taking on John Lindsey.

Bruce: Yeah, that's true. It sure didn't take the management
long to schedule me for a match, did it?

Rick: I didn't think it would. They can see your potential.
You've got a style that they're sorely lacking the GWA, and I think that they'll
embrace that.

Bruce: Some of them will, I'm sure. I'll just have to be a
little more persuasive with the others. I'm really looking forward to
making an example of Lindsey. I mean, the guy's won three titles, and I think
that beating him will really prove that I'm a worthy competitor, to the fans and
staff alike.

Rick: So have you given any thought to the next couple of
weeks?

Bruce: Well, they've got a tournament for the Coliseum title.
I think I'm going to try for that. What do you think?

Rick: I think you've got a serious chance at the belt, given
the other competitors that will be in the tournament. You've just got to try
hard. And remember that if you don't win it through the tournament, you can
always get it later. You're young, so there's no hurry to be on top in your
first month.

Bruce: Yeah, I know. I am a little concerned about how
Lindsey fights. I haven't been able to get any kind of read on him at all.

Rick: Well, from what I've witnessed and researched, he seems
to fight a lot like Alan. Big brawler type. He's not so quick though. If you
just stick to your ground fighting, you shouldn't have any trouble with him. But
that's not to say that he's a slouch. As you said, he is a former
champion, and that says something.

Bruce: Right. As you taught me, anyone who can get in the
ring has a chance of winning. But, at the same time, stepping into the ring
against me is the first step in losing. Remember that, Lindsey. But I've got to
get going now, Rick. I'll be back here tomorrow, though.

Rick: Tomorrow, same time.

[With that, Grant stands up and walks out of the gym, leaving
Melmoore to recline in his chair, propping his feet up on his desk as he watches
his protégé leave, as the scene fades out.]
