I was always under the assumptions that TPTB were the ones behind this whole situation. Though I still believe that Angel's shanshu really has nothing to do with the baby. Perhaps it's a different prophecy, one that's so important that higher powers have deemed it necessary to break the physical laws of vampires. We already know from a few spoilers that some people are astonished by Darla being pregnant and them hunting down to figure out the reason why.

But if aint TPTB, could it be an opposing force? After all for every bad guy there's a good guy, so there must be another higher EVIL power that are going against the TPTB, the Senior Partners for one, but ah... that's more speculation.
