not from the danger but from the emptiness
marked across her like a scarlet letter A
she wakes up every morning
thinking it's a prank
looks down to see herself and realizes painfully it is the truth
spelled out to her in the bruises and bite marks
that decorate her body
ridden with shame and no other choice
but to hide in her soul until it is safe to come out in her body again
