Man, this turned out long! Hope you all enjoy it.

Behind a hazel plate glass window,
scratched,
smudged,
and beaming tallow glare,
a crippled form,
arms drawn in, head down,
skin the hazy gray of lost memories,
eyes haunting glassy pearls set in the face
of an unwilling mermaid trapped
in briny swirling pools of neglect.
My hands are hot as hell
on the surface of the pulsing aquarium,
as an alarm sounds,
shocking me from the study of this specimen
of a copper scented array of memories.
"Life support systems critical,"
a voice from somewhere warns.
I turn my attention
to the figure in the murky tank
who is all but eaten alive by starvation,
and reach my arms out
as if by sheer will alone
I intend to break through to save this one,
but I find my own arms emaciated.
I realize I must find my strength from somewhere else,
so I push with all the soul that I can muster.
I must get in,
I'm not close enough to save it.
Just as I think hope remiss:
bliss, my form comes through.
As I grasp to pull it out with me,
it pushes away and speaks to me,
"The irony of you. Trying to save me
when you cannot save yourself.
Go now, before we both perish in this languid cancer."
"I have not come this far to turn aside.
No matter what the consequence may be,
please fly away with me." I plead.
Perhaps we both may live,
perhaps we both may die,
but as long as we're together,
may we stay full and dry.
