Subject: The Base In General

Having lived in Campbeltown for 30 years and also worked out at R A F Machrihanish for a number of years i can honestly say that appart from the off Midnight flight from the SR-71 Blackbird and the covert operations by the SAS and the US Seals there was not really anything out of the ordinary going on at the base.

Yes there was Nuclear depth charges and other stuff like that but it was all normal stuff,,, Probably the strangest thing I saw was on a Summers day in 1991 when there was a parachute exercise on by the Seals and one of the chutes did not open,, the just drove down the runway and lifted the DEAD BODY into the back of a landrover and went back to the Old Parachute tower building. A lot of us seen it and it was reported in the paper but they denied it happened, but thats typical of the military.

I do belive thought that the SR-71 Blackbird used to come in at night because u could hear the distinct whine off the engines when it was taking off,, it was always in the early hours of the morning and it always landed and took off from the West so as not to come accross Campbeltown.

As for the money that was spent on the base, this money had been allocated years before in the spending budget and had to be spent, the base was in desparate need of repairs and upgrading,, we were out there working and there was nothing secret getting build anywhere. the reason for the long runway was for the landing of the USAF Galaxy and was also used as a training airfield for British Airways Concorde and emergency landing field.

The reason that the base as likened by both the SAS,SBS, Marines and the US Seals was because of its proximity to the open hills and the open sea for training exercises, As far as i know the stance at the moment on the use of the base is to have a joint European Rapid Responce Unit there for deployment to world trouble spots... As it is the have sold off all the housing to a private consortium and a danish company called VESTAS are building Wind Turbines Windmills) in a factory within the base.

Maybe some day soon we might see it back as a working base and if the LITTLE GREEN MEN want to come and visit us they r more than welcome they wont be out of place with the PINK ELEPHANTS that some of the locals claim to see after they have been out on the town for a night,,lol
