SARAH Geronimo, who rose to fame after bagging the grand prize in the "Star for a Night" talent search in 2002, says she's scared to compete in international singing contests.

"I don't want to disappoint my fans here in case I lose in an international competition," says the 16-year-old. "I'm giving myself a few more years to develop as a singer."

Rachelle Ann Go, 18, Sarah's successor in the Viva-sponsored "Star for a Night" contest, won second place in the 7th Shanghai Asia Music Festival at the Shanghai Broadcasting System theater in Shanghai, China earlier this month.

"I'm very proud of Ate Rachel," Sarah told the entertainment press over lunch last week. "She deserves to win. Walang tatalo sa biritan dun [No one can belt it out like her]."

"But I really want to mature first," she repeated, "to improve in my singing, and to work on my confidence while performing on stage. Besides, I'm also busy doing other things right now."

Sarah admitted that her health suffers because of her hectic schedule.

She has just come from a "Night of the Champions" tour in the United States with Rachelle Ann, Christian Bautista and Mark Bautista.

The teener said she had tonsillitis a few days before she was set to perform in one of the cities they had visited in the States.

"I was really nervous," she said. "I had to sing a Regine Velasquez medley pa naman. I even sent Ate Reg a text message. She told me to rest."

"I'm a lot better now," Sarah added. "Pero mababanat nanaman ako [I'm going to under a lot of stress again] when I start performing in mall shows for my album. My mom [Divina Geronimo] says I just have to discipline myself, so I try not to eat sweets and spicy food as much as possible."

Last week, Sarah formally launched her second album, "Sweet Sixteen," which is her follow-up to her now quintuple-platinum record "Popstar: A Dream Come True."

The new album's carrier single, "How Could You Say You Love Me," was also composed by Vehnee Saturno. Eugene Villaluz produced the album.

The "Sweet Sixteen" album includes other original compositions like "Lumingon Ka Lang," "Minsan," "Prinsesa ng Puso Mo," "Champion," "Love Can't Lie," "And You Smile at Me," "You're Taking My Breath Away," "Sana" and "Tunay Talaga."

It also features revivals like Freddie Mercury's "Love of My Life," the Queen's "I Wanna Know What Love Is," "You Don't Know Me" and the inspirational song "Light of a Million Mornings."

Sarah is also filming "Lastikman," her first movie opposite Mark, who is playing the title role. The movie is Viva Films' official entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

Sarah will also perform at the Araneta Coliseum on Thursday, Nov. 19, along with Rachelle Ann, Mark, Christian, Frenchie Dy, Sheryn Regis and Raymund Manalo in a show called "Pinoy Idols."
