Various Artist
Regine Velasquez - Regine Live! (Viva Records)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Summary : Not for those with bad heart conditions and discriminating ears.
Sounds Like:Regine Velasquez screaming, wailing and yelling. Whoever declared Velasquez a songbird must have been tone deaf. Listening to her reach all the high notes isn’t at all pleasurable. It makes one nervous. Velasquez fails to emulate the real songbird, Barbara Streisand, in this album of classic covers, assuming that was the intention. Too bad since the collection of classic songs were great -- the interpreter wasn’t.
You May Have Heard:Mancini classics such as "Moon River," "Two For The Road" and "Moment To Moment," Barry Manilow staples like "Could It Be Magic," "Even Now" and "If I Should Love Again," "Autumn Leaves," "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," Whitney Houston’s "I Wanna Run To You," "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and other ballads. The only difference is, the original singers beautifully sang them. Except for one -- "Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw" (I Need You), which is a Velasquez original.
We Fancy:The only calming rendition in the entire album was "Moon River." Then again, it’s how the melodic song is supposed to be sung. What else was likeable about the album? Hmm...love the design.
We’re Not Sure About:Velasquez sounded uneasy singing the chorus of "You Will Be My Music.". "You will be myyy music, youuuuu will be myyy song" is reduced to sounding like a threat rather than an endearing ode to a beloved. The jazzy arrangement of "Autumn Leaves" sounded a bit off, since Velasquez’s voice isn’t best suited for lounge music. Plus, once you’ve heard Frank Sinatra sing it, there’s no turning back.
Too much vocal quivering on "Hanggang Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan" (Until The Edge Of No End), it really was annoying and miserably failed to deliver a melancholic emotion on the listener.
The initial part of "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" is completely inaudible unless the volume is on full blast. Velasquez sounded like she was muttering her way through the romantic song. You’re only able to make sense of the ballad when it reaches the high notes. Only Streisand can do justice to that song. And the bonus track "Somewhere" -- wasn’t necessary. Are you kidding me, a bonus track with that voice?
Verdict:You know what the verdict is, unless you weren’t paying attention. If you do end up getting the album, do not drink coffee or other caffeinated beverage while listening to it. Avoid the aggravation.
